VOW? WHAT VOW?

Our young people and their views on marriage.*

As part of my efforts to ensure I don’t get locked in my own echo chamber regarding my christian beliefs, trends in the kingdom etc. It’s so easy to lose touch with the reality of everyday lived walk of faith. Both interesting and disturbing findings, responses.

Anyway, so, I’ve taken to informally polling young people about marriage. With the rate at which their unions are crashing, I was curious regarding what effect if any, their christian backgrounds, growing up in christian homes (for those who did), have had on them, their views. Informal now mind you.

The ‘roots’, foundations. So I ask: if you could only have two ceremonies out of typical three we do (church, court/civil, traditional, aka intro and engagement) which two would you do?

To my great surprise (and dismay that there were any at all selecting it 😩😳😢), some – not 1, some, selected traditional and court!

They said they can always do ‘blessing’.
No need for hoopla and expense of white wedding. Partly economics driven no doubt, but be careful in dismissing wholesale what they are also saying. What they are also saying is, as one young lady put it to me; the traditional and the civil/court are more ‘binding’.

The religious ceremony part…who holds you accountable and what can they do except be “quoting Bible to you”. 😢😩

They said if you’re just a cultural christian, or a carnal christian, or just a church goer, and the many other varieties of christian, well…🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ Bible quotes are meaningless.
No soil to plant them, for them to take root.

I asked what is the solution?

More intensive and serious targeted premarital counseling.

More focus on character building specifically for this demographic. Coincidentally, they are also the group we most complain about re manners, integrity, work ethic, attitude etc.

Prayer. Especially if you have children in this bracket. Or you are a counselor. Anointing to break through to hardened and/ or ignorant hearts.

God and He alone, will teach, guide, provide spiritual wisdom for each encounter.

  1. Interesting findings. I thought I would see Traditional in view of the decolonisation mindset but we have we deeper problems
